As the original flagship of the Rio Concho Communities, Rio Concho Manor originated when a group of retired officers from Goodfellow Air Force Base approached city leaders, including Houston Harte and Colonel Robert Augustinus, regarding a need for low-cost housing for seniors.
The Rio Concho Trust was formed in 1960 with a mission to provide dignified, affordable senior housing. Funding was sought from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mr. Houston Harte called upon President Lyndon B. Johnson to move the loan through HUD for approval. Construction on the Manor high-rise commenced in 1964 and now provides two hundred twenty-two low-cost studio and one-bedroom apartments for senior citizens. Forty-eight of the apartments are subsidized through HUD allowing qualifying residents to receive rental assistance.
Offering high-rise apartment-style independent senior living, Rio Concho Manor offers privacy, security, planned activities, on-site management and maintenance, a beauty/barber shop and RV parking. All utilities, except telephone, are included in the rental price.
Apartments feature walk-in closets, refrigerators, apartment-sized stoves, carpeting, window coverings, a 24-hour emergency call system, and safety rails in the tub/shower. Also available are laundry room, recreation room, individual floor lobbies, covered parking, transportation to shopping, and the McGowen's Dining Room, which serves lunch each day for a nominal fee.
Located on our 17-acre downtown campus overlooking the Rio Concho River, the Manor offers easy access to historic downtown San Angelo, many churches, medical facilities, parks, shopping areas, and restaurants.
Rio Concho Manor is a non-smoking community. Residents must be age 62 or older and meet requirements set forth in our lease.
